Electric Trucks
The Los Angeles region is the heart of of our nation’s goods movement. Already home to 40% of all goods entering the United States, the industry is expected to continue it’s rapid growth, bringing more and more trucks into greater Los Angeles.
Every day, thousands of trucks drive through LA neighborhoods picking up our trash, carrying cargo, and delivering goods to our homes. Most of the trucks on our streets are dangerously outdated: powered by diesel and other dirty fossil fuels, they expose millions of LA residents to toxic emissions and have extremely poor fuel efficiency. Given the immense pollution that these trucks generate, LA will fail to meet basic air quality standards until we upgrade our trucking fleets by shifting to non-polluting trucks.
Now is the time for LA County to lead by replacing emissions-spewing trucks with zero-emissions models. With hundreds of electric trucks already on California’s roads, it’s clear that electric trucks can deliver the same performance and functionality as diesel or natural gas trucks while avoiding 100% of the deadly vehicle emissions. These trucks are the best and only pathway to achieve our clean air goals while improving the health of truck drivers and the neighborhoods they serve.
With dozens of makes and models already on the market, electric trucks perform a variety of jobs and are ready to join vehicle fleets for delivery trucks, refuse trucks, work trucks and more. Electric trucks are a smart and cost-effective investment for local governments in the LA region. Compared to their fossil fuel-powered counterparts, each electric truck can save thousands of dollars annually by dramatically cutting the costs of fuel, maintenance and operations. Additionally, since all electric trucks are powered by the same electric powertrain system, switching to electric trucks makes it easier and cheaper to manage municipal vehicle fleets.
Our coalition is working to electrify the truck fleets in Los Angeles as quickly as possible. We work alongside impacted communities to encourage local government agencies to make stronger commitments and financial investments in all-electric trucks, including:
Adopting resolutions to transition to 100% electric refuse trucks;
Applying for government funding opportunities to buy electric trucks.
