Take action to urge LA Metro to electrify our bus fleet for LA 2028 Olympics!

In 2017, LA Metro made a historic commitment to transition to a 100% zero-emission bus fleet by 2030. While early steps were taken, such as electrifying the Orange Line, progress has stalled. As Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics, Metro’s current plan falls drastically short—only 256 electric buses, just 12% of the fleet, will be operational in time for the world to watch. This lack of ambition is a missed opportunity for climate leadership, public health, and innovation.

With the federal government stepping back from climate action, Los Angeles must lead the way. The 2028 Games present a once-in-a-generation chance to showcase LA as a global leader in sustainable transit. Other Olympic host cities have set the bar high: Tokyo electrified 90% of its fleet in 2020, Beijing converted nearly all 12,000 of its buses in 2022, and Paris electrified 50% of its fleet in 2024. LA Metro must rise to the challenge.

Investing in a zero-emission fleet will deliver lasting benefits: cleaner air, high-quality jobs, and a more resilient transit system. We are calling on Metro to size this moment and take decisive action:

  • Deploy at least 1,175 electric buses to align with climate and air quality goals.

  • Electrify seven Metro divisions to support a fully sustainable transit system.

  • Ensure strong job standards to make Los Angeles a hub for clean transportation manufacturing.

The world will be watching our city in 2028. LA must seize this moment to lead on climate action and clean transportation for all Angelenos.

Call on LAUSD to commit to a 100% electric school bus fleet by 2035.

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is ready for electric school buses.

Now is the time for our schools to commit to a 100% zero-emission school bus fleet by 2035. To succeed with school bus electrification, LAUSD must accelerate infrastructure planning and electric school bus deployments now. The benefits of prioritizing LAUSD’s electric school bus fleet are immense: access to once-in-a-lifetime funding opportunities now, cleaner air for our kids, supporting our renewable energy goals, and creating good, high-paying local careers. It is the future, and we not only can do this, but must do this for our future generations.

School districts across the country are committing to electric school bus fleets.

Large districts are all-in on a rapid transition to electric: Montgomery County will replace its 1,400+ diesel buses with electric buses by 2035, without any additional cost or job loss. Nationally, school districts across the are implementing 12,275 electric school buses across 38 states, a 10-fold increase in the last year. The technology is ready, and Los Angeles is ready to lead.

Electric school buses reduce pollution, address climate change, and build a better economy.

Protection for Vulnerable Kids’ Lungs: Zero-emission battery-electric school buses are the safest, healthiest buses for pupils, drivers, and communities.

Clean Back-Up Power: Vehicle-to-grid-enabled school buses are the ideal vehicle to use for energy storage and climate resiliency. These buses can power the grid and buildings during times of peak energy demand, especially during the summertime and regional emergencies.

Local, High-Road Jobs: Los Angeles has a vibrant electric bus and vehicle manufacturing hub, along with strong Building Trades unions, that together provide meaningful apprenticeships and career opportunities for the diverse communities of Los Angeles. Each additional investment in electric school buses contributes to high-road, well-paying electric bus manufacturing, infrastructure, and apprenticeship programs for graduating students and their communities.

We are calling on LAUSD to implement strong electric school bus goals, plans, and commitments:

  • 100% zero-emission school buses in LAUSD by 2035

  • 50% zero-emission school buses in LAUSD by 2028

  • Develop a fleet-wide transition and infrastructure plan, including a vehicle-to-grid energy analysis, in conjunction with LADWP and other partners

  • Apply for all available grant funding and examine innovative financing opportunities

  • Build good jobs and equity principles into LAUSD’s school bus procurement by adopting U.S. Employment Plan principles
